POKOTABI / Café Pony
喫茶 ポニー
In business for over half a century in Yodo, Fushimi, Café Pony serves up crisp-pressed breakfast sandwiches, hearty omurice, and a nostalgic selection of cafe drinks.
01 / ABOUT THE PLACE
For morning visitors to Café Pony, the deeply toasted hot pressed sandwiches are a prime attraction. Sealed firmly around the edges and grilled until pleasantly crisp, the bread holds savory slices of ham, crisp lettuce, and a subtly sweet omelet. Morning sets can be ordered with hot coffee, black tea, or milk, making for an easy, comforting start to the day. The bakery options offer plenty of variety as well, spanning simple buttered or jam toast, ham sandwiches, and toasted cheese sandwiches.
Come lunchtime, the kitchen turns out the kind of warm, satisfying fare that defines a neighborhood kissaten. The omurice has earned a loyal following and is available in both its orthodox style and a soft-cooked version with fluffy eggs, letting diners match their mood. Regulars often turn to the house special, "Pony Rice," alongside familiar Yoshoku staples such as curry rice and pilaf.
Operating for more than half a century in Fushimi's Yodo area, not far from Kyoto Racecourse, the cafe has a calm atmosphere filled with well-worn wooden furnishings. It serves as an unhurried retreat between walks or errands, inviting guests to sit back over a Viennese coffee, mixed juice, or a classic cream soda topped with a scoop of ice cream.
